It was like searching for needles in a haystack, except the needles were as tiny as splinters, and the haystack was scattered all across the seabed.

Divemasters Donny and Melky of Eco Divers were mindfully helping us divers find the tiny denizen we had all come to see, each systematically checking every plant on the vast algal pasture we hovered patiently above. The task was made infinitely more difficult by the fact that the whole stretch, as far as we could tell, was sporadically covered with greenish-white Halimeda algae grass. Such is the hunt for the Pontohi Pygmy Seahorse, the one centimeter Jewel of Bunaken. It’s no wonder it was only recently discovered, despite the fact that this was Manado – long recognized as one of the true macro hotspots of the diving world.

On this dive at ‘Celah Celah’ in the Bunaken National Park, the visibility was much better than on previous days and as if on cue, a Spotted Eagle Ray came soaring out of the blue, curious about this bunch of divers with noses poring over the local vegetation. I dashed out to meet it, momentarily leaving the rest of the searching party.

The ray danced in front of me, composed and quite unafraid, as if it knew I didn’t have any lethal wide angle weapon with which to shoot it – I was stranded with merely a macro photography setup. Like a ballerina, it twirled and pirouetted, at times generously looping within arm’s reach. The white spots on its gray body were now transformed into twinkling stars, seemingly floating on the flat palette of its 1.5- metre wingspan.

Finally, the finale, and as if choreographed, the Eagle Ray banked and flew into an incoming school of Boers Batfish. Elegantly, the star of the show and its entourage moved onto the next reef for their next programme, leaving me with bulging eyes and swallowing salt water – dumbstruck.

Gathering my wits together reluctantly, I turned and looked back at the wall where in the distance the frogman bandwagon continued their guerilla mine sweeps for the small seahorse, oblivious to the dance performance. Playtime was over, I told myself, back to work – wishing this time that I had brought a magnifying glass down with me.

We inched forward and combed the reef for another 45 minutes before our guide signaled for every one to stop, and the search, as it had been for the previous few days, was again over. Climbing back onto the dive boat, the zealous dive team shyly apologized to all the divers about their fruitless search. We felt bad for them, for we were the ones who had set them their difficult task of looking for this seahorse.

This dive trip to Manado had so far been tremendously fruitful; the incredible encounter with the Eagle Ray ballerina and the batfish extras had left me ecstatic, notwithstanding the seahorse. We had also been greeted in Bunaken National Park by our usual hosts of underwater friends: the colourful walls, healthy soft and stone corals, dense sea fans and whips, numerous reef fishes, friendly turtles, a handful of White-tip Reef Sharks, schooling pelagics, ‘typical’ red-coloured pygmy seahorses, the coral-encrusted Molas Wreck, Giant Clams at ‘Fukui Point’, and more. It was also our first time seeing Melon-headed Whales here.

However, the futile search for the elusive Pontohi Pygymy Seahorse left us a niggling disappointment. The itch to find the rare gem was fast becoming an obsession.

Passage B

When we think of shrimp, the image of a docile, shy, fragile creature comes to mind – their main defence mechanism being that of a supreme camouflage or frames so diminutive you can barely see them. What makes the Mantis Shrimp such a remarkable specimen is that they possess possibly the hardest, fastest punch in the animal kingdom.

The most obvious and unique features of Stomatopods are the two raptorial appendages, located beneath the head. There are two types of these appendages, or dactyls as they are known – the long “arms” they use as weapons. It is from their dactyl movements that their common name of ‘Mantis Shrimps’ was derived, after the Preying Mantis.

The main difference between these creatures and the similarly named insect’s striking style is that the insect strikes its prey from above, thus preventing their prey from escaping by taking to the air. The Mantis shrimps dactyls, however, emanate from below and take an incredible three milliseconds to become fully extended, hitting their prey where it is more vulnerable to attack. Another difference is that Preying Mantis grips their victims whereas the shrimps adopt one of two distinctively different families, namely ‘spearers’ and ‘smashers’.

All Mantis Shrimps have two compound eyes comprising of up to 10,000 visual elements. Although the eyes generally point forwards they are capable of swiveling round, and in different directions. This is exceptionally useful as it allows the stomatopod to view the surroundings whilst in its narrow burrow without having to twist and turn its body, or even leaving the safe confines of the burrow.

As the members of the ‘Spearer’ family are primarily nocturnal feeders, their eyes are effective in drawing in what little light is available as they sit and lie low in their homes, waiting for their prey to pass by. They are equally efficient in murky waters. The ‘Smasher’ family tends to inhabit clearer waters and are more active in the daylight hours. Their eyes have adapted accordingly; their visual perception comes from no less than ten visual pigments, allowing them to more easily identify camouflaged prey.

The Mantis Shrimps are probably among the most inquisitive shrimps, frequently found peering at divers through their burrows or just behind some rocks. Some are even daring enough to stand on their hindquarters and tease you to a game of “catch me if you can”. Most offer great photo opportunities.

When they’re in their holes with just their weird honeycomb-capsule eyes peering out, just zoom in on the details of their eyes for a good macro picture. If they’re peering out from behind rocks, frame them for a head shot, being sure to capture their folded claws. And if you find one daringly posing out in the open, then just snap away in whatever mode is easiest as you can be sure that it’s not going to be there for much longer!

But how does a photographer get that close to these shy yet potentially dangerous critters with their kung fu slashing arms? You first have to overcome the fear that they will lash out at lightning speed; in fact very rarely will they attack a huge diver many times its size unless grievously provoked. They’re pragmatic, finding it much safer to hide rather than fight, particularly since they’re generally found very close to their dens. Once the fear of a close encounter is overcome, getting personal with the mantis is less of an issue. In fact if the approach is very calm, without fidgeting and with the camera all prepared for the shot, divers can get extremely close to the animal.

It helps if you can read their body language too: since the Mantis Shrimp does not tend to swim backwards like lobsters, it will usually look in the direction of its desired path. So when it starts to look away, it most probably means that you’re getting too close and that it is going to flee in that direction. So back off a bit and it may just remain there for the shot. It would truly be a shame to miss out on a shot of this photogenic wonder of nature.

Delia was taken aback, Barbie had deceived her! What Delia did afterwards she did not quite understand, for she turned to Barbie and began throwing merciless punches to her face. Delia pinned her down onto the floor and jumped on her hopeless body until Barbie vomited her lunch. She darted into the classroom, brandished a knife and began waving it at the ones who had bullied her all her life. Delia stabbed the closest girl, and made her way throughout the classroom, slitting and spearing anyone who came up in her field of vision. Blood stained the walls and the once lively bodies now lay strewn around the classroom. But Delia was nowhere near finished. She swabbed a pen from the nearest table and drew a cross over her school uniform, just above her stomach. Delia knew that if she stayed alive, chances were she would have to spend the rest of her life in prison. Pinpointing the knife against the rough cloth, Delia pulled back and speared the knife into her stomach, pushing as far as it would go, Pain shot through her body, her vision blurred, and she took in the last breath of air alive.

Her snobby classmates sniggered in the background, while Delia’s face burned in shame. She rushed to the toilet, fighting back her tears and slamming door after her. “Why must my mother be the new janitor? Why must she embarrass me this way?” spitting out the words with hate. Taking out the silver penknife in her pocket and started to slash her own wrist, watching the blood flow out of her body. “Pain is good,” she murmured to herself.

She finished up what she was doing, washed her hands and went back to the classroom and face the humiliation once again. “Ha! Your lunch is so disgusting. And oh, why are you decorating your hand with red paint?” asked Susan as she walked towards Delia to get a closer look at her hands. Delia frantically hid her hand into her pocket, but it was too late as Susan grabbed her hand and discovered what Delia had done to herself. “This is the prettiest design I have ever seen in my life. Where did you do this at? Recommend the shop to me! This is so cool!” exclaimed Susan as she continued staring at Delia’s hand. Delia used this opportunity to get back at Susan for what she had done to her. “I will tell you where to get it, follow me.” She said calmly as she led Susan to the toilet. Susan was shocked but followed Delia to the cubicle. Inside, Delia flashed her penknife and with a smirk on her face, started slashing Susan’s face. “What are you doing?! Let me off! This is so painful! Help! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!” Susan bellowed at the top of her voice.
“Isn’t this what you want?” Delia said as she continued slashing Susan’s face. Suddenly, the cubicle door swung opened and Mrs Lim, their form teacher, stepped in. “Why are you shouting? I can hear you from the other side of the building!”

Delia smiled sweetly and said “I was just helping Susan decorate her face.” Mrs Lim saw Susan’s face and exclaimed “The decoration is so nice, you are so skilled! I also want it!” Susan screamed, “No, Mrs Lim, don’t come here!” Delia stabbed Susan in the stomach and leaving her intestines on the floor, she started on Mrs Lim, who was waiting expectantly. Suddenly, Delia’s mother opened the door and was shocked by the mess in the toilet. “Delia, what are you doing? You know I have to clean up all this mess!” she said crossly. “You better clean up the mess you have made!”

A few minutes later, Delia walked alone out of the toilet and back into the classroom. Her classmates all noticed the new red decorations on her hands and face. They were very impressed and clamored to get one too. Delia smiled and started her work.

Her parents decided not to take care of her and literally dumped her in a nursing home and no one visited her. She then died a miserable death.

there it goes~

By now, Delia was so tangled up in the kite strings of her embarrassment that she could not fly straight if she wanted to. “I have to go,” Delia said, and rushed out of the classroom.
Just as she left the classroom, she met the discipline master of the school, Mr Lim. When he saw her, he asked,” Where are you going girl? You are supposed to still be in class.” She ignored him and continued running, until she reached the Eco-garden, where it was quiet and no one was there to bother or disturb her. She sat down and broke down almost immediately, crying profusely. The concerned school councilor saw her and went up to her to make sure that she was alright.
“Are you alright? You look quite pale and your eyes are bright red, you look like a rabbit. What happened?” Unfortunately for Delia, this councilor had a split personality. Delia looked at her and said “I just failed all my examinations and my teacher described me as dim-witted in front of the class, leaving them laughing. She said I studied very hard, however I still failed, and said that I was wasting the world’s depleting resources. I have no idea what to do.”
The councilor thought to herself, what an idiot, crying over spilt milk is not going to help. Instead, she plastered a concerned expression on her face and said “It is okay, you have tried your best, that is the most important thing. The biggest enemy is not the world, it is yourself.” This caused Delia to feel that she was a failure and was being reprimanded. “You all do not understand me, why must you be such a busy-body. I don’t need your help. Who do you think you are. You are just a goody-two shoes that boot-licks the teacher. Get out of my sight.”
Delia broke into a run and ran to the highest level in the school compound. The councilor thought to herself, what a loser, go and die. Mr Lim saw Delia on her way to the highest level of the school.”You there, HALT” “Check your attire before dying, at least die with some pride.” Delia adjusted her attire and continued on her journey to death.

Delia stood on the edge of the building. Her curtain fringe covered her bloody red eyes and she could not see where she was standing. The mean councilor she met just now decided to take revenge and pushed her off the building. SPLAT goes the flattened Delia.

At Delia’s funeral(she was from NPCC), NPCC Cadets went to pay their respects to her. After that, they held a party to commemorate the death of Delia! It had a lucky draw, buffet and games. CGSSB was even invited to perform. Many chipmunks visited Delia too.

hello everybody.

today im going to share one of my very memoriable experience with everyone.

it actually happened quite long ago

abt 8 years ago

bt i still remember the incident vividly just like yesterday.

some background information:

as i am an only child, it is rather boring or lonely in a family of 3.

so my mother bought me a rabbit

it is has pure snow white fur

and also a pair of bright rounded eyes.

it seemed as if it is a toy

upon seeing such a cute rabbit

i decided to feed it

not with cabbage or carrot

bt with my favourite fruit------ strawberry

i cut up the strawberry into tiny pieces and started to feed the rabbit

at first it is very happy and active but after a while it seemed tired and sleepy

so put it back to the cage

the next morning, i woke up and the first thing i do is check on my beloved rabbit.

to my horror...the poor little rabbit is shaking weakly

upon seeing that i brought the rabbit to the grass field near my house.

bt the rabbit showed no sense of enthusiasium

sadly my parents and i bought it to the vet

and hours it later it was pronounced dead.

the reason is caused by diarrel which is the result of feding strawberry

in conclusion, i sincerly advice those who own a rabbit at home--never feed ur pet with strawberry.

so damn nice lor

we all tied 2 cute pony tail with fury star

upon arriving henderson
we are all shocked!**
why?
the place is sooooooo small / tiny/mini/ little
okay...we are in purple someone so obvious to the public
kind of pieseh,.,
then we rehearsed with music again
think it's fun!!
haha...that call us lala dui ( cheerleader)
lol.
so funny cos after welcoming the ministers
we go n take balloon sculpture----a cute dogie
haha
then went to support the council ppl.
then went home.
hoho...was chatting all the way home ~
conclusion: a nice day for me

okay realised there are really lots of faky ppl on earth
they are releasing green house effect/gas
yap. they are unhealthy to me.

bt still very peifu these type of ppl la
at least they act well
as for me...
i cant helped it bt to be honest n truthful.
